Getting started
What is Mato.do?
Mato.do is a shared family to-do list that runs on WhatsApp. You send Mato a text, a voice note or a photo, and AI picks out the tasks and files them in one shared list. The whole family sees that list on a web page, with no app to install.
How do I get started with Mato?
Send "Hello" to Mato on WhatsApp at +33 6 95 40 29 92. Mato walks you through creating your list and inviting your family. You can also send your first tasks straight away, and the list gets created along the way.
Do I need to install an app?
No, Mato works inside WhatsApp, which you already have. Your list is a web page you can open in any browser.
Does Mato work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, Mato works on any phone with WhatsApp, iPhone or Android. On a computer it works through WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop. There is no Mato app in the App Store or on Google Play: Mato lives in WhatsApp and on mato.do.
Do I need an account?
No, not to add and view items. An account, tied to your email address, is only needed to manage family members and lock the list.
Using Mato
How do I add tasks or groceries?
Send them to Mato on WhatsApp as a text, a voice note or a photo. One message can hold several tasks, a deadline ("before Friday") or a name ("ask Sophie to call the plumber"). Google's Gemini AI splits out each task and files it in a category such as groceries or home.
How do I check something off?
Tell Mato, or tap the item on the web list. A message like "milk is done" is enough. On the web list a checked item fades out, and tapping it again brings it back.
Can I use Mato for groceries?
Yes, groceries go into their own category automatically. Write "buy milk, eggs and butter", or snap the paper list on the fridge, and the items land on your grocery list. The WhatsApp grocery list page walks through it.
What languages does Mato understand?
Mato understands English and French, typed or in voice notes. You can mix both in the same message, and Mato replies in the language you write in.
Can the AI get things wrong?
Yes, Mato can put an item in the wrong category or mishear a voice note. To fix it, send Mato the correction, or edit the item on the web list, where you can move it or untick it.
What happens if I delete my WhatsApp messages?
Your list stays as it is, because it is stored by Mato, not in your WhatsApp history. Clearing the chat or switching phones deletes neither the list nor what Mato has already received. To get back to your list, message Mato again or open the list link. To erase your data, see "How do I delete my data?" below.
Family and sharing
How do I add my family to the list?
Send "invite" to Mato on WhatsApp and forward the message it sends back. That message holds a family code: each person sends it to Mato from their own WhatsApp, or taps the link in the message. A family list takes up to 4 members, and one WhatsApp number can belong to one list only.
Who can see our list?
Everyone in the family sees the whole list and can change it. The list link opens without an account, so anyone who has it can read the list. To prevent that, lock the list in Options, Members, and the link will only open for signed-in members.
Can someone without WhatsApp use the list?
Yes, through the list link. From a browser, they can check items off and add new ones. They only need WhatsApp to message Mato or send it voice notes.
Pricing
How much does Mato cost?
Mato is free for one person, with no time limit. The Family plan, for 2 to 4 members, costs €1.50/month or €10/year. It starts with a free trial as soon as you add a second member.
How do I cancel my subscription?
The paying member cancels from the list's Options panel ("Manage my subscription"), or by emailing [email protected]. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period. You keep access to your data.
Privacy and data
Does Mato read my messages?
Yes, the ones you send it, and only those. Mato uses AI (Google Gemini) to understand your messages and extract tasks. Your messages are processed by the API, but are never used to train AI models. Your task text is then encrypted at rest (AES-128-GCM) with a key specific to your family, so the database never stores your lists in plain text.
Is my data secure?
Yes. Your tasks are encrypted at rest (AES-128-GCM), your WhatsApp messages travel through Meta's official WhatsApp Business API, and all data is hosted in Europe (EU). We never sell your data. We measure site traffic with Google Analytics.
How do I delete my data?
Send STOP to Mato on WhatsApp, then confirm by replying DELETE within 24 hours. Your account and your messages are then deleted, and the family list stays for the other members until the last one leaves. You can also email [email protected]: all your personal data is deleted within thirty days of the request. The privacy policy has the details.
